Abstract

Representations of Moors and Christians have very deep roots in the popular Hispanic culture and remain alive in the Alpujarra (Granada). The Alpujarra is the last place of the secular confrontations between Islam and Christianity in Spain. This anthropological study analyses the semantic structure of the different representations in the actual texts and documents from the Alpujarra. The study, starting from the historic context, looks at the social functions of legitimation of this dramatic representations. Specially it analyses the ideological scheme of Negation of the Other and its negative implications for the dialogue of Civilisations.
