Abstract

This article points out the heterogenity of the moorish community through the study of the moorish population and the institution of slavery in the Kingdom of Granada during the XVIth century. Moorish people belonging to different social levels owned slaves during the first half of the century. But, from 1560 on, several laws prohibited them from buying or owning slaves. Only the rich élite were able to maintain their slaves if the crown provided a special license. From 1569-1571, due to the rebellion, a great number of moorish rebels were enslaved. Most of these moorish slaves were owned by Christians, but also rich moorish noblemen bought and sold them.
