Abstract

The aim of the present work is to unravel the matrimonial structure in Malaga in the 16th and 17th centuries, analysing the evolution of the widows´ second marriages. I focus on studying the relation between periods of economic ups and downs and these marriages, as well as the rise of mortality caused by epidemic diseases. I reveal the options of a widow when entering the marriage market in an urban area, and the possibilities she had to continue with a similar social position. The estimation of the levels of endogamy and exogamy in relation with the geographic origin of the spouses allows appreciating the level of acceptance of the immigrant. I also analyse the participation of the widow in the working life of the city and I relate in detail, by using the method of reconstruction of families, interesting aspects of biological reproduction. Finally, the analysis of their lastwills and testaments allows us to approach their daily affective world.
