Emotion and Writing: Luis de León and the Construction of a Saint (Teresa of Ávila) for himself

The present study proposes to link the construction of sanctity as an emotional palliative against the feelings of absence felt by the Augustinian Luis de León (c.1528-1591). We will establish, in the first place, the friar's belief in his lack of mystical contact with his imagined divinity. We will see that he expressed it verbally during its writing process, a moment of reflection and introspection that is itself a source of emotion and a place for its crystallization. Then, we will observe that he proposed in Teresa of Ávila’s sanctity and humanity —object of editorial and biographical design by Salamanca’s professor—, not only a saint by and for the others, but also a saint for himself.
