Abstract

At the time of the Enlightenment the initiation journey or travel was seen as an excellent means of acquiring experience in appreciation, and written accounts circulated widely. These publications contributed to the spread of more realistic views of countries which were undergoing or had undergone radical changes in time. Antonio Ponz was to have published a volume on Granada in his A Journey to Spain, but the volume never saw the light. This loss deprived us of an essential document for the understanding of the Andalusian town, but is compensated for in part by the detailed description of Granada to be found in Viage de España, Francia é Italia (1806-1812), written by Nicolás de la Cruz Bahamonde, Earl of Maule.
