Abstract

After its conquest by the Catholic Kings in 1489, the town of Almería underwent a series of difficulties culminating in the disastrous earthquake of 1522, which threatened to destroy the very centre of the town. Under these circumstances resolute measures were necessary to reaffirm Almería's status as a Christian town. These efforts were carried under the auspices and impulse of Bishop Diego de Villalán, who built a new cathedral. lts situation, building, gothic style, military function and triumphal facades express the concept of the Christian refounding of the city.
