Abstract

The present study analyzes the names which were used 10 denote the Iberian Peninsula (Tarshish, 'Aspamia', Sefarad) in the Jewish tradition and literature. Special emphasis is placed on the contexts in which these place names were used, their semantic evolution, and their role as a source of medieval myths regarding the origin of Jewish communities in Spain. Ancient and "modern" myths of the earliest Spanish-Jewish diaspora are discussed.
