Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss and edit the inventories of Spain’s interests in the Sephardic communities of Greece during the Spanish Second Republic within the framework of cultural politics of Spain in the Balkans. The 8th January 1932, the government passed the Republican Circular Order No. 1221, in which consulates and legations were ordered in the Sephardic communities to perform three inventories: A. demographic interests, B. economic interests and C. spiritual interests. The information provided in the inventories is very important to know the exact number of Sephardim who lived in Greece, the Spanish-Greek trade relations, the expansion of the Spanish language and press, etc.
