The scarcity of archive records together with the limitations that, in general, are shown by the Arabic sources, essentially those considered historic or geographic, involves a serious obstacle to the study of al-Andalus society in its various facets. In order to alleviate, as far as possible, this documental shortage, some scholars have attracted attention to profit from the knowledge that texts of a legal nature dealing with applied law may provide. This paper tackles the usefulness of a particular kind of legal sources, the watha'iq or shurut texts, notarial treaties or formularies, for the study of aspects related to the economy and society in al-Andalus, with the presentation of some practical cases.Downloads
