Abstract

Critically focuses on the Cooperation Agreements signed by the Spanish State and the Islamic Commission of Spain in 1992 as the cornerstone which nowadays embodies the Right to Religious Freedom recognized to Muslim communities in Spain. Bibliographical research, semi-structured interviews conducted with members of the Advisory Commission on Religious Freedom, plus close scrutiny of its content, the process of negotiation and subsequent problems in its practical implementation clearly reveal this text to be a specific case within the more general context of the complex construction of “positive secularism” in Spain.
