This article introduces the photographs which Ruth Matilda Anderson took in the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco in 1929-30. She traveled there as part of her work for The Hispanic Society of America, a museum and library in New York city founded by Archer M. Huntington. The institution was dedicated not just to the fine arts but aspired to presenta comprehensive view of Spain, Latin America and all territories where Spanish was spoken. In this spirit, it wanted to create a comprehensive photographic archive documenting life and customs in these territories and it therefore sent staff photographers out to do this. Anderson's work in Africa follows the method she had established in previous trips, which in turn explains many of her choices. At the same time, the differences between Africa and Spain of the period also shape her work.
