The training of Art Historians in urban planning: contributions and shortcomings. From a I+D research project to the cataloging of a General Urban Plan

Abstract

This article focuses on the challenges that Art Historians have faced in recent decades in
relation to their participation in urban planning. I have approached this topic from two
work experiences: The first examines a national research project on mural painting and
the consequences it had on its urban cataloging, and the second is as editor of reports and
catalogs of architectural heritage in general and special protection plans. These
experiences show the need to address a more complete formation of Art Historians in the
urban field. A good identification and selection of the architectural heritage would have
very positive results in municipalities, both for the preservation of their properties and formaking them available to users and tourism, contributing to their social and economic revitalization.
