Abstract

In this paper we analyze discourses and theoretical discussions around categories such as woman, gender and nation before and after American independence processes. We also look at roles played by Mexican women during the conformation of the nation-state in Mexico, both as mothers of citizens and mothers useful to the state, but excluded from the basic rights assigned to the liberal political citizenship. However, such an exclusion provoked a reaction of ideological and strategic mobilization of women, who used not only traditional female social spaces, but also other domains, where they pursued different forms of political action.
