Abstract

This article, originally a paper presented at the Colloquium on the Conquest of Vélez- Málaga, describes the feudal government of the Kingdom of Granada. Although in the majority of the lands conceded by “the Catholic Monarchs” none was actuality removed from the authority of the Crown, the tendency of the beneficiaries to convert these domains into feudal estates, awakened the distrust and often the opposition of the councils affected.

One of the numerous examples of this in the Kingdom of Granada was the concession of Almayter, in Vélez-Málaga, to the Count of Tendilla, which has been chosen for study because of the abundant documentation on the subject provided by the “Registry of Charters” of the Count of Tendilla.
