Abstract

This article analyzes the lengthy constitution of the feudal estate of Campotéjar, rectifying the lack of precision concerning its early origins which is found in certain works published after 1917, as well as emphasizing the characteristics which make it stand out from other such estates in the Kingdom of Granada. The marquisate of Campotéjar was strongly rooted in the concentration of landowners that soon appeared in the region of the Montes Orientales during the first stages or repopulation (1492-1514) in such a way that the jurisdictional consolidation of the estate (1627) ended up being an illegal act, begun in the second half of the 16th Century, against the “collective domain” of the city of Granada. Furthermore, this act was perpetrated by a member of the Granada city council, given the fact that the holders of the marquisate created in 1643, the Granada Venegas family, had occupied an aldermanry (veinticuatría) of the capital of the new Spanish Kingdom since the days of the first don Pedro, the former Nazari Cidi Yahya.
