Abstract

In this article the author sets forth various examples of coastal watch towers of the 16th Century (Barbarroja, Torre Vaqueros, Guadalmansa, Cortijo del Conde...) which were not built by the Harbourmaster’s Office of the Kingdom of Granada, but by the owners of great estates which were threatened by the attacks of Barbary pirates. The importance that these towers had for the economy of the region is manifest in the data furnished here about the estate of Guadalmansa (Estepona), whose tower, still standing, is one of the most solid of those along the Costa del sol of Málaga.
