Abstract

During the 16th century, the city of Almuñécar became the stronghold from which the Castillian administration planned strategies for the rest of its “land”. Serious problems were encountered throughout the century in the process of repopulating this coastal zone. The major component of Almuñecar’s active population is the tertiary sector (35,75%), followed by a large primary sector (35,32%) that includes a considerable number of underprivileged persons, and, finally, a small secondary sector (13,95%).
