Abstract

Contrary to what is commonly believed, the German society and culture of the 18th century were already familiar to most Spanish readers before the publication of the book De l’Allemagne by Madame de Staël in 1813. Three other important sources of information about German thought were available in Spain at that time: the works of German authors on the shelves of Spanish libraries, either in Latin or else translated from the French; articles from the foreign press appearing in local and national newspapers and periodicals; and literary works, in particular poetry and drama, including the historic dramas based on Germanic themes by playwrights such as Luciano Francisco Comella.
