Abstract

Cristóbal Colón was the first to use dogs with a military function in America during the first campaign, the repression of the island of Jamaica and the La Española in 1494. At this, the use of “man´s best friend” as a combat weapon was not expected but later the spread to all Latin American territories. This was the case in the conquest of island of Boriquen (Puerto Rico) by Juan Ponce de León, as well as the dogs that accompanied the army Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro, and in the conquest of New Granada by Jiménez de Quesada. As well as those who accompanied Hernando de Soto in Florida, etc.
