Abstract

This paper analyzes the discussions held in Santa Fe del Rio de la Plata between 1573 and 1660 about the capabilities of the office of  “alguacil mayor” to have a voice and vote in the council. The review does not focus on what the prescriptive privileges assigned as the office or on the apparent contradiction could exist between the standards and practices, the analysis chooses to seek an explanation for the different uses of the policy instruments that were handled by agents reconstruction of local political configurations and put the interests at stake in local (city) and governance.
