Civic education is the very basis of democracy. Any democratic system that ignores its necessity will suffer, as a result, the fading of the democratic rationality of its institutions. Liberal democracy constitutes a good example of this progressive weakening of the democratic structures. Benjamín R. Barber refers to it as "weak democracy". Education and democracy are closely related, which is why, for this author, the regeneration of democracy, with its real contents of political participation, depends on education. Teaching democracy means serving the community.
