What do we talk about when we talk about femicide? An approach

The article deals with the concept of femicide, which in recent years has also found its way into the media and social discourse in Germany. It is shown that the definition and understanding of the term is inconsistent and that common definitions such as ‘killing a woman because of her gender’ or ‘killing a woman because she is a woman’ are inaccurate and misleading. Instead, an objective-structural definition is proposed, according to which femicides are deaths of women or people who are perceived to be women; deaths that fit into a pattern of misogynistic violence. Finally, it shows how the discursive potential of the term ‘femicide’ can be better exploited.
