Abstract

Javier Cercas´s writing has been received with attention by various members of the Polish intellectual community, including literary theorists and critics, historians and political and cultural journalists. The debate has focused on the ethical dimensions of human behaviour at critical moments of history and revealed mutual understanding which points to certain analogies in the historical experience of Poland and Spain. The main criteria applied to distinguish the work of Cercas involve the literary practice of questioning and deliberating different visions of the past in a way that engages the present. Thanks to Cercas’s talent for innovation and challenging meanings, his novels become important instruments of influencing the reader and are capable of redefining languages and ideas and, therefore, of originating change.
