The topic of the universe of women’s prisons, as a part of the Francoist penitentiary system demonstrates the form in which the dictatorship exercises its power over a vast group of the spanish society. The following article summarizes a number of studies relevant to the topic (Vinyes, suárez/colectivo 36, cenarro, cuevas, Doña, the purposes of Vallejo nágera) and places it within the context of the contemporary debate on the national historical memory, in a broader attempt to reflect on the topic of women’s prisons within the contemporary narratives in historical fiction (Ferrero, Fonseca, chacón, cañil), and to present them through possible analytical perspectives (realm of memory, postmemory, gender).
