Abstract

Improving the eating habits of schoolchildren is a necessity due to its impact on their development and school performance. This study investigates the notions of families regarding eating habits and practices in relation to their children nutrition. An integrated methodology has been used based on research instruments such as a survey and an interview. In this way, a questionnaire has been administered to the families of third year Primary Education students in an Andalusian educational center, and collective interviews have been held with groups of mothers. In the results of the study, incorrect dietary practices were detected regarding the consumption of fruit, vegetables and fish by children; whereas, consumption of cereals, dairy products, eggs and meats were found to be closer to nutritional recommendations. The analysis of the mothers' statements shows the presence of traditional and prescriptive eating models, numerous myths about eating, and their predisposition to deepen their understanding about nutrition. The conclusions of the study address the need for family-school food literacy initiatives to be undertaken given the significant deficiencies identified.
