Family or residential care? Children looked after and accommodated in Portugal

Abstract
Besides foster care, the child care system also includes residential care and adoption where the child is taken from its environment and placed in a different honre and an alternative life context. This article analyses each one of these options in detail, comparing criteria for selecting them, describing their recent evolution and considering the challenges they present now and in the near future.
