Abstract

The content I present in this article aims to give a general idea of the contextual framework in which the picaresque genre is established and its main differences facing the courtly genre, as well as the role of the “free women” during seventeenth-century in Spain by analyzing two concrete works: La hija de Celestina and Teresa de Manzanares.

Therefore, the main objective is to fix the contextual contents in a clear and orderly way to allow, next, a reading of the works so that the reader can understand them better. This article is intended, above all, to get an idea of the role of “free women” during seventeenth-century of Spain for these two authors: Salas Barbadillo and Castillo Solórzano.

The socio-educational purpose is to facilitate an approach to the role of the “pícara” at that time in contrast to the figure of the “pícaro” Lázaro, unavoidable reading in the stage of compulsory secondary education.
