Abstract

Yusuf Šahin is the most widely known Egyptian director in the West and probably the most controversial director in his country. His latest work, al-Muhayir, sparked a debate between the intellectual circles and the conservative, or Islamic, sectors. The controversy was subsequently resolved in court. This article presents a summary of Šahin's career as director and reviews the debate concerning al-Muhayir. The author includes an interview with Šah§n on this subject.
