Abstract
Profound social changes mark the current development paradigm which throws up specific social problems. A way out of most of these problems can be found in solutions such as creativity, higher qualifications for professionals, and in the empowerment of social actors, as well in the best use of endogenous resources. This framework of needs led to the creation of a new higher education course at the College of Education of Coimbra (ESEC), in Portugal – the Social Gerontology course. This article presents the current social context in which the course was planned and its interdisciplinary relationship with the existing course of Social and Educational Animation.
