Abstract

Today’s art, created within a system which oscillates between extreme individualization and ‘pseudo-globalization’, has lost the aura of prestige which for centuries had accompanied it, characterized it and even defined it.

In the past, art was the paradigm of the sublime, not only because of the genius with which it was associated, but also because of the elite audience for whom it was intended. Over the last few decades, however, it has come down from its pedestal to invite the public to become part of it and to complete it. It is evident that the image consolidated by centuries of tradition no longer responds to the demands of complex and dynamic societies. However, the mediators who should demolish this image in order to bring together people and art are the very ones who perpetuate it. Education in Visual and Plastic Arts must take responsibility for promoting contexts in which this encounter will be possible.
