Social vulnerability and population dynamics in Argentina, 2001-07
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article inquires into the social situation of Argentina after the socioeconomic crisis of 2001 and considers the persistence of risk in subsequent years. It discusses the main social (poverty, employment) and demographic characteristics (fertility and mortality), for national population and six provinces in different geographic regions.
Socioeconomic crisis produced an unprecedented degree of impoverishment (55% in 2002). Regional differences were maintained throughout the period of analysis due to structural lining. Economic expansion of 2003-2007 period improved levels of income and employment, while stagnation in life expectancy at birth, increased infant mortality rates and maternal and continuous increase in adolescent fertility are registered. We propose the hypothesis that in Argentina social vulnerability is structural and permanent, despite reductions in poverty and unemployment rates.
