Abstract

The Mexican countryside is characterized by a multidimensional crisis, affecting not only social wellbeing, but also the conservation of natural resources. As a consequence, from different disciplines new interpretive frameworks have been sought for understanding the multiple society – nature interrelations. In this article, an applied sociological approach is presented, illustrated by a case study form Western Mexico. The case study shows that rural landscapes are the result of dynamic interrelationships between society and nature. This article ends with a discussion of the implications of this recognition for conservation and development projects.
