Abstract

This paper, of methodologic nature, tries to go deep in the glances with which we constructed the information contained in any graphical image. It aspires to do using it like example the first printed representation that we know Barcelona (Civitates Orbis Terrarum 1572). Starting off of the diverse established cultural contexts -geographic, artistic, historical, documentary, city-planning…-, we try to show how, coherent with convictions assumed in each one of them, we projected rational glances, paying attention to its morphology, attributing a literal meaning to the diverse manifestations that we perceived. A naturalistic legibility forged and legitimized by the ruling empirismo in science. However, we misestimated the meaning metafóricos that it evokes, described like merely rhetorical, ignoring subliminal messages of cultural, social, aesthetic or ideological character. To be conscious of the readings that we exercised and to repair in the existence of other messages deposited in the image -and in the landscape- it constitutes a methodologic supply offered by the iconography.
