Abstract

Eduardo Hernandez-Pacheco, one of the most important Spanish geologists in the 20th Century, had a remarkable interest in the concept of landscape, and he wrote an interesting paper about it, “The Landscape in General and the Characteristics of Hispanic Landscape”, published in 1934 by the Boletín de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza. With a clear influence of Alexander von Humboldt, he had a naturalistic view of the landscape. However, in the classification of landscape elements, Hernandez-Pacheco includes, as ancillary elements, to cattle, crops and buildings, provided that they had a traditional character and were consistent with the natural environment. Also his photographs are part of his legacy to understand his concept of the landscape and its importance in the history of the Spanish landscape along the 20th Century. This paper presents the study based on one of his major works, Fisiografía del Solar Hispano, with special emphasis on their view of the landscape through photography.
