Abstract

The southeast of the Iberian Peninsula is characterized by a significant number of days of clear skies per year. Under stable conditions, during the night hours, inversion temperature nocturnal processes (ITN) develop with a notable vertical and spatial alteration in the thermal distribution. The main objective of the research is to quantify the degree of importance of nocturnal stability processes in the southeast of the iberian peninsula, and its influence on minimum surface temperatures. Through the daily analysis of nocturnal atmospheric soundings of the city of Murcia (1986-2015), the vertical stratification, frequency, typology or intensity of the ITN phenomena is identified. The results indicate a notable importance and predominance throughout the year (83.7% of the total), especially in winter. In addition, a characterization of the intensity of the nocturnal stability processes and a recent temporal study of the ITN processes and the main variables that trigger it are carried out.
