Abstract

In any given region, mountains display common identity signs that make them unique, but their singularity goes beyond their shared physical features. It is fundamentally linked to the interaction between the natural ecosystem and the social environment, which has defined a certain specific spatial and socio-economic model. The present article outlines how mountain socio-spatial structures respond to recent land dynamics, through the implementation of landscape changes and the development management strategies and land policies. Mountain areas are portrayed as going through a process of recovery and revitalization. They are currently overcoming the crisis and lack of organization with which they were faced between the 70s and early 90s.
