Abstract

The population of Castilla-La Mancha has began a period of demographic increase along the last two decades after a long period of population losses, although with remarkable differences between different areas. All the provinces increased their inhabitants except Cuenca, especially between 1991 and 2001. the greatest increase has taken place in the provinces of Guadalajara and Toledo, which are nearer to Madrid, due to the urban and industrial growth of this city. As for the distribution of the population, we must state that 50% of it is concentrated found in the twenty urban communities (3,26% of all the communities in the area), while only 20% of the inhabitants of the region are found in 749 rural communities (80% of the communities in the area).
