Abstract
Starting from the Bongaarts’ fertility model, we explore the causes and how they act through social factors to lead the population changes. On one hand, although Demographic Transition Theory is a starting point, the microeconomic view about family decision makings has an important role. On the other hand, the introduction of cultural variables has softened that approach. An integrated view is required in order to overcome the economic view failures (particularly, the search for causalities, beyond quantitative variables) and give answers which reflect the social complexity with empirical bases.
