Abstract

This research work focuses on the analysis of the relationships between private protected areas (henceforth PPA) and their role as places for tourism and recreation development. This is a topic of growing interest, although it has hardly been explored in Spain. The present article aims to provide a theoretical basis to help understand the links between private conservation of nature and tourism, and to reflect on some of the most important issues. To do so, a reflection has been carried out based on a narrative review of both national and international references. Within this complex context, key questions arise such as the motivations of owners and conservation organisations, the conflicts which have arisen between conservation and tourism use, and the need to undertake collaborative management of the territory, in which each of the stakeholders plays a highly relevant role. All these issues are discussed in depth at work.
