Abstract

The information collected in the two last censuses of population made by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) shows that the total number of people who live in Castilla-La Mancha has grown (1991-2001) but is still badly distributed by the territory. However, this loss of population does not happen in all parts of the region. We have confirmed the rural and peripheral spaces are still losing population and at the same time it is aging. In front of these situation, it is the cities (whit more than 10.000 habitants) that are mainly responsible of the increase of regional population. This facts causes some doubts about the rural development policies and its efficiency to solve the drecrease of population in the rural areas, which is one of its principal aims.
