Abstract

The report of child maltreatment is mandatory by law. It is also the first step to connect victims with potential source of professional support. However, not every victim are equally visible to those who are supposed to protect them. The current study aims to analyze the 15’365 reports of child maltreatment recorded in the Registro Unificado de Maltrato Infantil (RUMI) in 2019. The characteristics of suspicions has been described and the association between gender and seriousness with the age group of the victims, the type of maltreatment and the institutions who perform the report was tested. Results suggest that child sexual abuse are more reported among girls and neglect was more reported for boys. The law enforcement agencies tend to report more boys than girls and professionals from the health system tend tend to report more girls. Finally, maltreatment at early stages and child sexual abuse are mostly reported when they are severe. Results are discussed considering the existing literature and proposing lines of action and reflection.
