In recent times, the discipline of criminology has been focusing its efforts on understanding the motives that lead people to normative conformity and cooperation with institutions. However, there is a lack of a global and homogeneous theory that groups together the different motivations that lead people to obey institutional rules and decisions. Bottoms (2002), for his part, made a broad classification grouping the different mechanisms leading to compliance and relating some of these to different criminological theories and crime prevention strategies. The aim of this manuscript is to expose those relationships that Bottoms (2002) established and to try to connect the rest of the mechanisms of conformity with other criminological theories and prevention models. This contribution is based on the importance of knowing which conformity mechanisms exist and to which criminological theories they are linked, to be able to enhance prevention models that manage to deter crime and achieve greater compliance with the norms and institutions of power.
