Abstract

From containment to resolution? MINUSCA and the peace process in the Central African Republic

Abstract

The article aims to investigate the role played by the United Nations (UN) in conflict resolution in the Central African Republic (CAR). Specifically, we will seek to answer the following question: how has the stabilization character of MINUSCA contributed to the peace process in the CAR? Our hypothesis is that the stabilization character of the operation and the robust use of force have contributed to the success of the peace process in terms of containing conflict, but not exactly in the sense of promoting its resolution and the establishment of long-term peace since the mission has not focused on addressing the deeper causes of the conflict. Methodologically, the article will be based on the analysis of the mission mandate and reports on its performance, as well as data on budget, financial contributions, and personnel. Also, it will explore a set of data on the incidence of armed conflict and violent episodes involving civilians from 2014 to 2020.
