Abstract
This paper examines the importance of building knowledge in a cooperative manner, and freeing it from the rigid restrictions represented by certain processes of legal and technical enclosure. Taking that as a starting point, our goal is to present alternatives to these proprietary dynamics, analyzing experiences like free software or Creative Commons, two initiatives which seek to introduce the notion of public domain and commons into the intellectual, informational and artistic realm. We also use the philosophy behind these movements to explain an innovative educational project which we are developing at the University of Malaga. In this project, an interdisciplinary group composed of academics and students translate into Spanish and discuss a series of works devoted to the study of the commons, using this innovative methodology based on cooperative work.
