Abstract

The cultural model that acquires the society during a certain historical period forms and establishes what we denominated canon. We know “canon” as the valorized selection of fragments of the cultural patrimony by a community, in order to shape and preserve its historical heritage through its transmission to the society.

Educational institutions assume the role of transmission of this model through textbooks, becoming a decisive element for the consolidation of the cultural system. In Spain, the educative books are the main source of information for students, where the main publishers are responsible for selecting musical contents, and approach them to the classrooms.

Therefore, the textbooks become the ultimate expression of the dominant ideology about music, supposing the imposition of musicology's canon. We analyze the contents posed by the most important publishers to determine how the musicology’s canon has been created and transmitted through Spanish textbooks.
