Abstract

There is a long tradition of scientific exchanges between French and Spanish, although the epistemologies of both of them are not superposed. During a large part of the 20th century, the Iberian Peninsula was a field of study for numerous French geographers, particularly in the field of regional geography. At the same time, the French model of geography influenced the modernization of the Spanish geography. Currently bi-national research experiences more balanced exchanges in both directions and the research topics were extended to different branches of geography. This dynamic is promising and we have, with this special number, the objective of feeding it.

Our objective is to contribute to this promising dynamic and to establish bases for a French-Spanish geography. We present the common elements of the past and present investigations of French and Spanish geographers. After outlining the broad lines of our common epistemology, we introduce a selection of articles presented at the first French-Spanish Geography Workshops (Granada, 2016). We have complemented the analysis of these articles with a critical reading of other texts published in France and Spain to define a broad domain of fields and geographic objects that feed scientific exchanges between both countries, which were consolidated in the second French-Spanish Geography Workshop (Paris, 2017).
