Abstract

This paper deals two relevant aspects about the new configuration of the city in Andalusia. Like all the western European countries, that new configuration is metropolitan in morphological and functional terms, which it means that the historical physical and administrative limits are surpassed to encompass ever wider territories and settlements networks. In that sense, the analysis will be focused, in first place, on the way the different components of the metropolitan area are spatially arranged and, in second place, on the dynamics of both, the area as a whole and in their components. The diversity and complexity of the Andalusian metropolitan system, with nine metropolitan areas of different hierarchical level, allow that the analysis pursues not only the makeup of this urban universe but also to establish model of spatial organization and dynamics that can be applied to any other metropolitan system.
