Abstract

The Toledo region of La Campana de Oropesa y Cuatro Villas has been committed to the multifunctionality and diversification of its economic structure for decades. It does so in parallel with the dissemination of the principles and orientations of the European Union’s policy for rural areas. The aim of the research has been to analyse the transformation of the productive base that this region has undergone over the last 20 years and to assess the disparities between its municipalities. In order to achieve this aim, the quantitative analysis of the three sectors has been fundamental, using various statistical sources, a review of the reports of the rural development programmes, as well as other data provided by the town councils. The results show a considerable weight of primary sector activities, a timid but increasingly persistent consolidation of branches linked to the secondary sector and, above all, to services. The changes in the region have not been homogeneous, with large inter-territorial disparities, but they do, after all, show the path towards a new rurality.
