Abstract

The aim of the article is to show how appropriate can be an approach as heritage landscapes in order to understanding public spaces, and specifically unique public spaces. The squares of the bourgeois fabric of Cadiz are treated as a case study. Although each of these squares has its own entity as a place their joint character is highlighted. A character that is the result of shared socio-urban meanings, dynamism, opportunities and challenges. To this end, the suggested methodology analyses this system of places as a heritage landscape. It is been shown how it synthesises natural contexts, urban models, historical processes or recent dynamics and, furthermore, how it is endowed with meaning on the basis of its vitality and recognition. As a result, arguments and vectors that support its character and basic keys to the management of its authenticity and integrity are specified.
