Abstract

The intense snow activity in the medium and high altitude of the Cantabrian division mountains produces an accumulation of significant thickness of snow that unchains forceful avalanches that put human lives and infrastructure at risk. For this work, a general analysis is carried out through GIS of the conditions for the triggering of avalanches in the Somiedo valley, southwest part of the Principality of Asturias. It is added to this analysis the information observed during the fieldwork, photo-interpretation, interviews and historical sources, in order to realize the damage caused by these processes to the vegetation and infrastructure, especially on the AS-227, between the villages of Caunedo and Santa Maria del Puerto. Cartography of the valley’s environment is also provided: maps of vegetation, susceptibility and risk on the road. In addition, the development of AR in different media is proposed to host this cartography and in order to allow the viewer a more interactive and academic analysis on the study of avalanche risk.
